His...unique belief system and shut-in way of life have left him incredibly distrustful of anything and anyone. If he suspects someone has ulterior motives or is "lesser" than him in any way, he has no problem making a scene and telling them exactly what he thinks. His nonparticipatory nature usually means most people never get to that point with him anyway, as they'd rather avoid him altogether.
